I’ve seen this a lot online this week! People stressing and trying to do something great for Valentine’s day or disappointed because their partners didn’t go above and beyond. 😵💫 It’s okay and normal to go through a weird patch especially if this is your first Valentine’s day in a long distance context. 💕
1- Take the pressure off: it is a day, and if you love each other every day, no action or inaction really means much on V-day.
2- Let go of the fairy tale V-day date. There are so many other alternatives that can work for both of you but will not look like in the movies. That is 100% okay too!
3- Have a discussion, brainstorm on what it could look like for the two of you considering your level of energy, money abundance, time zones, etc.
4- Feel free to surprise your lover with something beyond that conversation, but give only to give them joy - no expectations of reciprocity. We are in a constant dance of giving and receiving, not everything needs to be equal at all times.
Just a few ideas to get you going for the next occasion: send a gift, write a heartfelt letter or social media post (you’ll know which one means more to your partner-no judgement!), make extra time in your schedule for a long, intimate conversation where you talk about your vision for life together, list the small moments that made you think of them in the past weeks, book a massage for them, schedule a date for V-day next time you are visiting, send them your sweater, send boudoir shots, take a personal development class to work on a relationship issue that has come up in the past (ooh that’s hot 🥵) the options are still infinite!
It can be easy for one to do lots and the other may not have the bandwidth to invest a lot for this day. Practice compassion and express your needs always.
